It sounds familiar!
The name of our farm, Rondomskrik, features in a local TV series, 7de Laan. The previous producer of 7de Laan, Annie Basson, visited our farm years ago doing research on interesting farm names – so this is how we ended up on a soap opera!
A bit of history
Rondomskrik was originally part of the farm Tweekuylen, the first cattle station (veepos) to be granted in the Swartland district by Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel in the early 18th century.
Tweekuil was granted to a Mr LPJ Lochner who only had one daughter. She married a member of the Louw family. Today the farm Tweekuil, as well as Rondomskrik, is still in the hands of the same Louw family. Rondomskrik was bought by LPJ Louw of Tweekuil, grandfather of the current owner of Rondomskrik, in April 1958.

The name Rondomskrik
The origin of the name Rondomskrik is uncertain. Documentation exists where the name of the farm is stated as Rondomschrift – so maybe the current name is a shortened version of the original.
The old translation of the Afrikaans bible in Psalm 31 verse 14 and Jeremia 6 verse 25 refers to “skrik rondom” which could mean “danger all around”.
It is said that the shepherds were afraid of everything around them and came to seek shelter on Romdomskrik because the farm is situated on a rise above the plains.
We translate our farm name Rondomskrik jokingly to “Roundaboutfright”.
